PPG Aerospace window repair operation approved by China aviation authority

PPG Industries’ (PPG:NYSE) aerospace transparencies business has received approval by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) to overhaul and repair framed aircraft cockpit windows, and it has begun operations in Suzhou to serve airlines operating in China.

PPG’s window overhaul and repair operation is located within its Suzhou application support center. It is the second the company has established to meet airlines’ growing transparency needs, according to James Romano, global sales director for commercial aftermarket transparencies. PPG’s first such facility began operation in 2006 in Huntsville, Ala., near its transparency manufacturing plant.

Initially, PPG is overhauling and repairing the number-two sliding cockpit windows for Boeing 707/727/737 classic airplanes as well as Boeing 737NG and 757, 767 and 777 airplanes. Window assemblies are overhauled according to Boeing component maintenance manuals or customer engineering orders, Romano said.

“Using a single source for framed cockpit window repair and overhaul services affords airlines cost efficiencies, time savings and convenience,” he said. “As a transparency manufacturer, PPG can handle all work involving the frame and glass or acrylic transparency. Locating the operation within our application support center gives us the ability to expand to meet demand as it grows, while providing customers a central service point for their aerospace product needs.”

PPG also has applied for certification by the Federal Aviation Administration that will enable the company to serve airlines operating outside China in the Asia-Pacific region, Romano said.

PPG Aerospace is the aerospace products and services business of PPG Industries. PPG Aerospace – Transparencies is the world’s largest supplier of aircraft windshields, windows and canopies, manufactured at PPG’s Huntsville, Ala., plant and by PPG’s subsidiaries in Sylmar, Calif., and Casaletto Vaprio, Italy. PPG Aerospace – PRC-DeSoto is the leading global producer of aerospace sealants, coatings, and packaging and application systems.
