Pilkington To Pay $60,000 For Plant’s Air Violations

Pilkington North America will pay $60,000 to settle violations of its Rossford plant’s state air pollution permit, according to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Toledo’s Division of Environmental Services cited the company in December, 2005, for excessive releases of particulates, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide from its glass-manufacturing facility at 140 Dixie Hwy.

Pilkington itself reported similar violations.

The company determined that the cause likely was related to the type of dolomite rock it was using at the time. It has since switched to another type, the agency said.

The agreement requires Pilkington to do emissions tests during each production run for the next year, and to do annual stack tests thereafter. It also has agreed to biweekly tests of the dolomite it’s using.
