Director: Recycling Center To Continue Collecting Glass

A local recycling center plans to continue accepting glass, but officials hope to find another plant to process the items.

Baxter Day Service Center in Mountain Home will continue to collect glass instead of discontinuing the service on Jan. 1 as previously announced, says center director Paul Neal.

"We're continuing to accept it now on a temporary basis," Neal said. "We're working on a solution. ... We want to keep it out of the landfill."

Customers are asked to put glass in a separate bag so it does not have to be sorted.

In October, the center announced glass recycling would be discontinued because of hazards to client safety.

Baxter Day Service Center works with developmentally disabled people to help them achieve independence.

Baxter Day Service Center staffs a recycling center where people can drop off paper, plastics, tin and aluminum cans and cardboard.

The center also picks up recyclable items free of charge from all NABORS garbage collection customers.

The center earlier decided to discontinue processing the glass because four clients have been injured by it within the past year.

Part of the problem, Neal says, is the recycling center is small and lacks space to keep the glass crusher — which spits out glass — in a separate place.

The center now will pick up and store the glass in a dumpster, but officials are trying to find a plant to process it.
