PPG introduces new high-temperature powder coatings

PPG Industries has developed new, high-temperature powder coatings that offer superior durability in prolonged exposure to temperatures of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.

Based on proprietary silicone chemistry, ENVIROCRON HT powder coatings are specially formulated for applications -- such as automotive, appliance, and lawn and garden -- in which resistance to high temperatures is essential, according to Rob Edwards, PPG's director of global powder coatings operations.

"PPG's new heat-resistance technology offers significant improvement over technology and products previously available to the industry," Edwards said.

In addition to their superior durability, ENVIROCRON HT powder coatings have superb adherence characteristics that enable customers, in the proper circumstances, to recoat or touch up products on the manufacturing line instead of scrapping them, Edwards added. As a result, manufacturers can dramatically reduce their product reject rate and increase their profits.

Customers using PPG's ENVIROCRON HT powder coatings have also reported excellent chemical and moisture resistance. The bottom line is that ENVIROCRON HT powder coatings can improve quality and manufacturing efficiency, Edwards said.

The coatings' quality and durability have been demonstrated during extensive testing at PPG's Coatings Research and Development Center in Allison Park, Pa., and in a three-year test in Florida.

ENVIROCRON HT coatings show no apparent degradation in properties when exposed to high temperatures over prolonged periods of time, Edwards said. And while they demonstrate continuous high performance at up to 600 degrees, ENVIROCRON HT powder coatings also can endure short-term temperatures of up to 850 degrees, he said.

Pittsburgh-based PPG is a global manufacturer of coatings, glass, fiber glass and chemicals, with 120 manufacturing locations and equity affiliates in 24 countries. Sales in 2001 were $8.2 billion.
