Toledo Museum Makes Glass History Absolutely Clear
|
A modest little saucepan used in the Roman Empire is among more than 5,000 glass artifacts and art objects in the Toledo Museum of Art's international glass collection.
The everyday, if ancient, object finds itself in equally impressive company in the sublime Glass Pavilion, a 15-foot-tall, one-story structure of gracefully curved glass walls that opened in August 2006.
The exhibition "The Art of Glass: Masterworks From the Toledo Museum of Art" is represented by hundreds of pieces from the permanent collection, including:
• An ancient gilded mosque lamp from Egypt
• A French Louis XIV medallion
• A chandelier by American glass artist Dale Chihuly
• "Vitrana," a glass patchwork wall by Toledo artist Dominick Labino
• A famous Libbey Glass Co. punch bowl made for the 1904 World's Fair
