Recycle Glass? Not For Much Longer

Allied Waste is no longer required to recycle glass under new recycling guidelines being considered by the Lorain County Solid Waste Management District.

The company, which collects trash and recycling everywhere in the county — with the exception of Oberlin and Lorain —plans to phase out collecting glass with recyclables starting in LaGrange Township as early as next month.
“Over time, we’re probably going to eliminate glass from the program,” said Dave Kidder, area marketing manager for Allied.

Kidder said glass is more trouble to recycle than it’s worth because a large amount breaks during collection and it must be separated into green, brown and clear varieties once it reaches Allied’s recycling facility in New Russia Township. The cost of recycling glass is higher than what the company earns for the program, he said.

Instead of glass, Allied, formerly known as BFI, will begin recycling corrugated cardboard and glossy paper used in magazines and catalogs.  “Rather than end up with a small percentage of glass we can recycle, we can recycle  100 percent of the cardboard,” Kidder said.
