EU Notifies Car Glass Makers Of Cartel Suspicions

Reuters reported that the European Commission said on Monday it had notified a group of makers of glass used in the car industry that it believed they took part in a cartel.

The Commission, the European Union's regulatory arm, did not immediately identify the auto glass makers involved. However, Japan's Nippon Sheet Glass said its British unit Pilkington had received a charge sheet from the Commission.

Japanese rival Asahi Glass (5201.T: Quote, NEWS , Research) also confirmed it had received a statement of objections.

"The European Commission can confirm that it has recently sent a statement of objections to a number of undertakings regarding their alleged role in a cartel for car glass," the Commission said.

"The statement of objections alleges that the undertakings concerned may have allocated customers and agreed on supply quotas and prices for most of the motor vehicle manufacturers in Europe," it said.
