PPG May Sell Original Glass Plant

PPG Industries Inc. wants to sell off the business that started it all: a glass plant in East Deer Township that opened in 1883.

Chief executive Charles Bunch told reporters and shareholders what analysts and others had long suspected - that PPG is looking to sell or downsize its glass business, and that the company's future growth will be fueled by its coatings and optical businesses.

About 200 people still work at the glass plant about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

PPG's fine chemicals business, which includes pharmaceuticals, could also be sold off because it is too small to compete globally.

"The alternatives for the businesses may include restructuring, forming alliances with other companies or divesting the businesses," Bunch said.
