Archrecord: Terrorist ringleader was an architect and urban planner

Mohammed Atta, one of the suspected terrorists aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which hit the north tower of the World Trade Center on September 11th, was a trained architect and city planner, according to published reports in various sources, including the New York Times and the Daily Mail of London. Atta studied city planning at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg in Germany. One of his former professors said that he was already an architect, though it was unclear where he had been trained.

Atta is suspected of being a ringleader of the terrorist group and the pilot of Flight 11 at the time of the disaster.

Update, September 19, 2001: The New York Times reported today that Atta received his degree in architecture from Cairo University in Egypt.

September 20, 2001: The Washington Post reported today that the identities of several of the hijackers are in question. Atta may in fact be alive. The terrorist who was using Atta's name was already using that name at the time of his education in architecture.
