Pilkington Takes The Lead Role At Aberdeen Theatre

A 250m2 double-glazed Pilkington Planar™ system is the latest addition to the 100-year-old His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen as part of its extensive refurbishment, which provides a new entrance area, café and a rehearsal room. The imposing glass façade of the foyer wraps around the building following the line of the adjoining corridor to the new rehearsal area, which allows the public to see the artists at work.

The project utilises Pilkington Planar™ frameless glazing system, incorporating 10mm Pilkington Suncool™ Brilliant 66/33 with a 16mm airspace and an inner layer of 6mm clear Pilkington Optifloat™, complete with 902 fixings and nexus castings.

Designed by Aberdeen City Council Architects, it was important that the glazing added to the high degree of comfort and visibility needed to enhance the theatregoers' experience. To achieve this they worked closely with specialist contractor Charles Henshaws on the project.

Jerry Almond of Charles Henshaws said: “Pilkington Suncool™ Brilliant was used to meet the environmental requirements of the building and complement the designer's vision of a light and inviting space. The glazing's energy efficiency properties are vital for insulating against the cold in the winter and protecting against over heating in the summer. The result is a stunning facility for the people of Aberdeen and its visitors to enjoy.”

Pilkington Suncool™ is a range of superior solar control products with high visible light transmittance and low emissivity in one off-line product. It offers the highest level of thermal insulation and is ideal for large areas of glazing to control solar gain whilst providing high light levels. Pilkington Optifloat™ is high quality float glass with unrivalled environmental performance that is also economical and easy to maintain. When combined with the world class Pilkington Planar™ structural glazing system, designers have the freedom to create a complete glass envelope for buildings with frameless façades for attractive modern environments.

An expansion to the Pilkington Planar™ range, Pilkington Planar Activ™, is now available. Pilkington Planar Activ™ combines Pilkington Planar™ with Pilkington Activ™ allowing designers to create the first ever self-cleaning frameless structural glazing systems.
