Companies
USA: Is Glass Plant Dropping Water?

The Owen Illinois plant brings more than $100,000 in revenue each year to Auburn just for the water and sewer services it uses.

Soon, that could change.

The city is in negotiations with the Sennett glass plant to keep its money flowing into the city's budget, but how much is unclear.

While Comptroller Lisa Green has heard that the County House Road factory may be digging its own wells, it still is purchasing water from Auburn and hasn't notified her of any billing change, she said. The company has not returned calls for comment.

Owen Illinois paid the city $38,000 in water from August 2005 to August 2006. The company also hands over $78,000 in sewer expenses, which is based on the water usage.

Corporation Counsel John Rossi said conversations on a water agreement began last fall.

The city continued with contract negotiations with the company early this month. The

parties are discussing water rates and supply, Rossi said. Because they are ongoing, he said he could release the details of the talks.

But contrary to any rumors, the company is not ending its water contract with the city, Rossi said.

That's something city councilors don't want to see happen.

“We don't want to lose any customers,” Auburn Mayor Tim Lattimore said.
