Glass Artists Share Their Expertise

Stained-glass windows often have a story to tell.  Now, Jim and Connie Johnson, the artists and owners of Layton's Designer Glass Works are finding out just how much those stories mean to the people who buy or learn how to make their own glass creations.

“Some people would say it's just a business, but what we do is work on memorable items that actually mean a lot to the customer,” Connie said. “One woman literally cried after we helped her finish a project she had stored underneath her bed for 20 years. We do that kind of stuff for people all the time.”

The couple went into business together using Connie's artistic skills from years of hands-on experience and her graduate work on the East Coast at the Ringling School of Arts, and Jim's management and 20 years of technical experience flying jets in the U.S. Air Force.

“It is not always easy for the two of us to work together, but I couldn't think of anything better because it's become our life working at this store,” Connie said.  The company's main focus is custom stained and etched-glass work, teaching classes, and selling tools and other items needed for the stained-glass hobbyist.  For Jim, who was talked into leaving retirement to join the business with his wife, the work has turned into a service opportunity for him.
