Glass Plant Nears Completion

The first tenant at the Gateway Business Park here is making nice progress with its construction schedule despite setbacks from Mother Nature.

It was on a hot day in June this past summer when officials from Oldmans Township, J.E. Berkowitz Company, and Salem County gathered on the dusty site at the Gateway Business Park to break ground on a $25 million glass manufacturing facility.

Fast forward six months to today and the facility, according to president of J.E. Berkowitz, L.P., Arthur Berkowitz, is about 70 percent complete and only a month behind schedule despite some early difficulties.

"We've had rain every single week since the month of September," he said. "You can't do site work when the ground you're working on is wet and completely flooded. We're trying to play catch up by working weekends and putting in overtime at our expense to make up for the days we've missed."

A water tower, located next to the 23-acre site the facility is being built on, was initially figured to delay construction because it was reported to be leaning slightly to one side. However, it was repaired quickly by the county and did not delay construction.

Originally set to be fully operation in March, Berkowitz said the 200,000-square-foot manufacturing plant would open its doors in April. The facility will consist of a two-floor office building taking up 18,000 square feet and a 182,000-square-foot glass processing facility that would ship glass in and out of the facility every day.
