One of China's earliest examples of fine glasswork is being showcased at an auction preview. Once a musical instrument, the piece is scheduled for sale later this week.                                       



Measuring 82 centimeters, it was once the body of a Guqin, the traditional stringed instrument. Based on the inscribed patterns, the piece was made in the Warring States Period about 2,400 years ago, when Chinese glassmaking reached a new height. On the surface is a bas-relief of a dragon and phoenix, which indicates the instrument was used by royalty. 

The instrument shows the designs of dragon and phoenix. And part of it is gilded. This is the first time such exquisite glassware has been found in China.

Chinese glassmaking goes back nearly 3,000 years. It saw great progress during the Warring States Period, when many decorative glass items were made for the aristocracy.

The glass Guqin will be sold at auction in Beijing, on Wednesday the 13th.
