NAFDAC Bans Soft Drinks In Glass Bottles After Jan 2, ‘08

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has directed all soft drinks manufacturers to phase out glass bottles and adopt the use of plastic bottles on or before January 2, 2008.
The Agency has also directed that all packages of soft and alcoholic drinks be scientifically affixed with expiry dates while companies caught revalidating expiring dates will be shut.
Giving the directives in Abuja during an interactive session with manufactures of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages Director-General of the Agency, Prof. Dora Akunyili noted: “Enforcement on defaulters starts on January 2, 2008. You therefore have a whole year to comply. Expired raw materials should never be revalidated.
“Electronic Bottling Inspection Device (EBI) must be installed in all plants before January 1st 2008”, she emphasized.
Akunyili noted that the major problem affecting most companies is the presence of sediments or extraneous materials in drinks, adding that NAFDAC offices throughout the Federation are inundated with an avalanche of consumer complaints of this nature.
“Despite efforts by the Agency to apply relevant measures to arrest this situation, the consumer complaints have persisted. The list of these consumer complaints is actually inexhaustible. It is painful to note that most of the time, it is after the innocent consumption of these contaminated products that the consumer discovers their true taste which could lead to serious health problem. It can also be traumatic.”
