Laminated Glass Won’t Break, Used Widely By Goldsmiths

Spokesman for a glass processing company said the strength of laminated glass has spurred many goldsmith outlets to use the product.

He said laminated glass consists of one or more layers of tough polyvinyl butyral film (PVB) which prevents the glass from breaking.

He was commenting on The Malay Mail’s frontpage report yesterday on a botched robbery attempt by three men at the Kwong Chen jewellery store at the Medan Idaman Business Centre at Batu 5, Jalan Gombak, on Wednesday.

The robbers, armed with a sledgehammer each, stormed into the store and tried to break the display case but escaped empty-handed when the glass failed to shatter.

“The laminated glass offers high resistance against penetration. When broken, the PVB interlayer safeguards it, making it shatter-proof,” he said.

He added that clients can choose the thickness of laminated glass, available from 6.38mm and above while the minimum thickness of PVB is 0.38mm.
