Pilkington Sponsors Arkwright Scholars

Kristina Milanovic from Withington Girls' School in Manchester and Gerrard Weale from Trinity Sixth Form Centre in Carlisle, are this year's Pilkington Arkwright Scholars.

Kristina, who earned ten A* GCSEs, is a member of the Robotics/Young Engineers club in her school. Last year, she took part in the Smallpiece Trust Energy Challenge in Aberdeen, helping to design and make a water oscillator to provide one of the Orkney Islands with cheap renewable energy.

Gerrard, who earned 10 GCSEs including two A*s and an AA double science award, plays rugby and cricket for his school and plans to study electronics and electrical engineering at university.

The Arkwright scheme was founded in 1991 to identify young innovators and encourage the top engineers of the future. Sponsors include Rolls Royce, the Strategic Rail Authority, the Royal Air Force and Pilkington.

Each scholarship consists of an award of £950 over two years, which is divided between the successful scholar - to support their sixth form studies - and the Technology Department at his or her school.
