Schott Glas honors regional winners

“Research is the In Thing” was the title chosen for a ceremony staged on Friday in the new Chemistry and Pharmacy building at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz where 86 entrants presented their work for the regional “Jugend-forscht/Schler experimentieren 2002“ (“Youth researches/Pupils experiment 2002”) competition. The event was once again sponsored by Schott Glas of Mainz.

In the course of the ceremony Schott Management Board member Dr. Udo Ungeheuer paid tribute to the prize winners. He made particular mention of the wealth of ideas, the creativity and the initiative displayed by the young people involved. "All of you have demonstrated with your magnificent projects that you have inquiring minds and an enthusiasm for science!”

At the same time Dr. Ungeheuer referred to the importance of research for a technology-driven company such as Schott. In support of the promising young talent the company made an earmarked donation of 250 euros to each teacher who had been responsible for supervising at least four of the entries. The school with the highest number of entries in the competition receives a donation of equipment to a value of 500 euros.

The 86 young people taking part in this year’s regional competition in Mainz submitted a total of 47 entries. In comparison with the previous year the number of young researchers from Rheinhessen was up by 12 percent, with a marked shift towards “Schler experimentieren” (“Pupils experiment”) and thus to younger entrants.

In the whole of the Rhineland Palatinate 931 children and young people took part. This means that the Rhineland Palatinate accounts for some 12 percent of those taking part from the whole of the Federal Republic.
