Dam To Block Pollutants At PPG

Work will probably get under way next week to keep pollutants under PPG Industries from getting into Lower Hudson Run.
The project, being done voluntarily under the supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will require construction of a small dam on Lower Hudson Run, a stream that flows between Hudson Run Reservoir and Wolf Creek. Its waters end up in the Tuscarawas River.
The new dam will be about 40 feet wide and 24 inches high, said PPG spokesman Bill Lynch. It will raise the water level along 2,200 feet of Lower Hudson Run about 18 inches and keep contaminated groundwater from flowing into the stream.
Most of the stream is about 6 inches deep now, he said.
The increase in depth and water pressure should keep the contaminated water out of the stream and under ground.
According to PPG, low levels of 12 toxic chemicals, including vinyl chloride and chloroform, have been leaching from the polluted aquifer into the clean surface waters of the stream.
The main chemical triggering the project is perchloroethylene, which is widely used as a dry-cleaning fluid and metal degreaser. It also is used to make other chemicals and is in some consumer products.
PPG Industries made perchloroethylene from 1949 to 1971, said Lynch, who is the company's senior remediation engineer.
