Asahi Glass Taiwan Denies Rumors Of Production Suspension

Although market speculation indicated a glass plant from Asahi Glass Fine Techno Taiwan (AFT), a 100% owned subsidiary of Japan-based Asahi Glass, will stop production for three months, AFT denied the speculation and said its furnaces and production lines are currently running normally and there is no problem with its glass substrate supply.
According to a recent report from the Chinese-language Apple Daily, the glass substrate plant of Asahi Glass at the Yunlin Base of the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP) will suspend production by three months due to problems with its furnace. Other market speculation also indicated the plant has halt production last week due to problems at ancient facility at the furnace.
AFT stated that the average lifespan for a furnace is about 5-7 years while the plant at the Yunlin base has been operated for only 2-3 years.
Nevertheless, most panel makers, downstream makers and other substrate suppliers are aware of the production halt at the plant and told DigiTimes the speculation is not made up.
Established in 2000, the Taiwan-based subsidiary currently has two furnaces in central Taiwan (with a third one under construction), with current production lines at the facilities including two fourth-generation (4G), four 5G and one 6G substrate lines, AFT said in an April article. The new capacity from the third furnace will kick off in the first quarter of 2007, sources said, adding that AFT plans to add two substrate lines, one 6G and one 7.5G line in at Tree Valley Park, an LCD TV industrial park near Tainan Science Park.
