Shanghai looks into safety of glass-clad buildings

Glass-clad buildings, once the symbol of modern and gleaming eastern Chinese metropolis, Shanghai, are being scrutinised by city building inspectors looking for safety risks after falling glass pieces injured two passers-by.

The first glass-walled building appeared in Shanghai in 1984. Since then, more than 2,300 such buildings have been erected, creating a total glass wall area of more than 10 million square metres, according to a survey by the Shanghai City Construction and Transportation Committee.
