R1-Billion G-Line Investment Advancing

A R710-million project by the PG Group to build a second float-glass line is advancing, with over half of the budget already committed and civil works well under way, the company says in a statement.

The facility is being erected in Springs, on the East Rand, and is part of a R1-billion capacity expansion and improvement programme over the next three years. Central to this investment is the building of the second float-glass line, together with the R300-million refurbishment of PFG's existing float line. The new float line will be dedicated to the manufacture of automotive glass.

When the new line is commissioned early in 2007, it will almost double PFG's current production capacity of 140 000 t/y of flat glass. The current float line, which was built in 1977, will undergo a substantial upgrade once the second line is operational, enabling the PG Group to meet the glass needs of its regional markets and still have an additional 40 000 t/y available for export to Europe and the US.

The new line will feature the latest glass-making technology supplied by Guardian Industries, one of the world's largest glass manufacturers and builder of close on 30 float lines around the world. Features of the line will include automated on-line cutting and packing, and a facility to produce coated glass.
