Taiwan Headlines report that Corning Inc. of the United States, the world's largest supplier of glass substrates for TFT-LCD panels, is scheduled to inaugurate an R&D center in Taiwan this month.
Corning's Taiwan R&D center will be the company's fourth in the world, next to the ones in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. In addition to glass substrates, the Taiwan center will also research some other products such as solar cells, regenerated energies, opto-communication, catalytic converters, etc.
The center will be located in northern Taiwan's Hsinchu, the most mature high-tech industry cluster on the island.
Industry sources pointed out that Corning, in fact, planned to set up the R&D center in Taiwan many years ago, but the project was delayed by an intellectual-property infringement litigation against local Picvue Electronics Ltd., which finally reached a conciliation with Corning last year.
