No ceiling for local glass-makers

Viet Nam’s glass-makers are now in an ideal position to step up exports of construction-grade glass, according to Viet Nam Glass Association.

Domestic glass-makers earned US$4.5 million last year, exporting 1.6 million cubic meters of construction glass, a sharp increase over the 118,600 cu.m exported in 2001 at a value of $166,000, the association said.

Pham Thien Can, vice chairman of the association, said the ongoing global construction boom was an opportunity for Vietnamese glass producers to increase their exports in coming years.

The nation’s key glass export markets- Cambodia, Thailand, India and South Africa- have increasing demand for construction-grade glass, he added.

Can stressed that Viet Nam’s glass producers enjoy several important advantages; readily-available imput materials, including silicate and dolomite, an experienced workforce and low production costs, he said.

However, Vietnamese glass producers need to take steps to further improve the quality of their products and better compete in the industry, Can said.

The Viet Nam Glass Association said locally-made construction-grade glass has also been exported to Laos, Taiwan, Australia and the US
