Raining inside the Atrium

Walking through the Atrium about a couple of weeks ago, you could have used an umbrella.

But owner David Bryce said crews made a temporary fix last week, and a more permanent repair is being done this week.

It was raining heavily inside the downtown mall Dec. 16, with garbage pails and buckets scattered around both floors and puddles outside Miele's Cafe.

Seven buckets lined the door outside the second-floor entrance, which is not used in the winter.

Bryce said the problem was supposed to be fixed earlier this month, but this hasn't been ideal weather for roof repairs on the building.

He said the leaks do not occur after every rain or snowfall, and he hopes to get the repairs done soon.

"It can take just snow. It can take just the rain. It can't take both," he said.

The leaks come from the glass roof that gives the Atrium its name, he said; the ceilings above stores and offices are not leaking.

A person answering the phone at Miele's Cafe declined comment on the puddles that had formed outside the store. Once the rain showers dried up, so did the pools of water that resulted.

The building was completed in 1979. In recent years, it has become home to state office workers as well as a CVS, a bingo auditorium and a few small stores.

The building is showing its age and the impact of its design, Bryce said.

"The good idea is not to build buildings with glass roofs," he said.
