Art of glass on show

The city's first private glassware museum will open to the public next month in Xintiandi.

The 1,000-square-meter museum, named Crystal China, will be operated by Shanghai Yang and Liu Li Gong Fang Crystal Co Ltd.

"The museum will showcase glassware from ancient China, Europe and the collections of Loretta Yang," said Zhao Ming, a manager at the museum. "We aim to promote the art of glassware to more people."

According to Zhao, the earliest glass piece collected by the museum dates back to the Warring States Period (476-221 BC).

Works by Emile Galle, the most famous French crystal artist of the 19th century, will also be displayed at the museum.

In 1996, Yang and her husband established their glassware factory to produce the artistic crystal pieces in Shanghai. Their business soon expanded through 60 boutiques scattered in the city.

"It is our earnest hope to reflect the traditional culture through these dazzling glasses," said Yang. "That's also why our renderings are often filled with a strong artistic and oriental flavor." In a bid to celebrate the opening of the museum, Yang did a sculpture of bodhisattva of compassion with 1,000 hands and 1,000 eyes.
