Officials confirm glass plant shutdown

Officials at Lancaster Colony, the parent company of Bartlett-Collins Glass, confirmed late Wednesday that a temporary shutdown of glass production operations at the Sapulpa facility will go into effect Dec. 16. and continue through Feb. 26, 2006.

Carroll Cottrill, consumer affairs manager for Lancaster Colony, said this morning that 458 employees work at the plant, and that the company has not determined how many employees will be temporarily laid off.

Kevin Finn, plant manager, at Bartlett-Collins, said the shutdown was a result of soft market conditions and high inventories. He said the action was "necessary and unavoidable."

Some departments will not be affected, as their operations are considered necessary to the continuing operations of the plant.

Bartlett-Collins will continue to ship product during this period.

Preventive maintenance, training programs and equipment repairs will be done during this time as well.

For now, the company statement said it will use the next two weeks to notify affected employees.

John Gonzalez, president of Local 57 United Steelworkers of America was scheduled to meet with company officials Wednesday, but the meeting did not take place.

He said he will try to meet with them today to find out specific details on who will be affected.
