UK: Glaziers no busier despite 24 hour drinking

A lack of drink related vandalism meant emergency glass fitters suffered a quiet weekend last week.

The first weekend of the new licensing laws failed to erupt into the expected mayhem leaving glaziers to deal with a virtually unchanged number of call-outs.

A survey by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) found that the average call-outs for weekend breakages on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November rose by only 5 per cent from the previous weekend.

GGF Chief Executive, Nigel Rees, said: "Our members were preparing for the potentially busy weekend that had been hailed in the press. I'm pleased to say that the predicted wave of destruction failed to materialise.

"Our members did not report any more emergency call-outs than they would expect on an average Friday or Saturday night. We will keep a check on trends in the run-up to Christmas, often a busy time for our business. However, at this juncture it all seems to be going well."
