Olympus, NSG Jointly Develop Glass Surface Processing Technology

Olympus and Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) have jointly developed a technology to create minute irregularities on a glass surface in the orders of 100nm to micrometers and flexibly produce a large types of products in small quantities. The partners will improve the technology for use in making optical components such as mirrors and cover glasses, micro reactors, biochips, and nano-input and plastic molding stamps, without using semiconductor processing and metal molding.

The technology first uses a sharp indentor to locally apply high pressure on a glass surface to create condensed layers. When the glass is submerged into a hydrofluoric acid solution, irregularities are created on the glass surface as locally condensed layers are etched at different rates.

Olympus and NSG plan to market the products that will be produced using the new technology, in two years' time.
