200 jobs cut from glass plant

Over 200 union employees will not be retained by the German company Gerresheimer Group now that they have officially taken over operation of the Glass Group facility, a union official said Thursday.

Nearly 300 others will keep their jobs.

Les Orange, president of Local 219 of the Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers Union, said last week letters were sent to the employees and Wednesday night the numbers were confirmed.

He said 145 members of Local 219 were not hired once the new ownership took over.

Overall, between Local 7, the Teamsters, and the Mold Makers, Orange said more than 200 employees were not offered jobs.

There were approximately 400 to 500 union employees at the Millville plant.

Rick Hasenauer, vice president and director of human resources at Kimble, said the employees were not let go, due to the fact they were not acquired as part of the sale between Gerresheimer and GGI.

Kimble is a Gerresheimer holding and the Millville plant will operate under this company.

"We did not get the employees," he said. "GGI let them go and we hired some."

Hasenauer said Kimble hired approximately 280 plant workers from the three major unions, 40 salaried positions in the plant, and approximately 12 positions in sales and other areas.
