Glass exhibit now on display at Campus Martius Museum

More than 200 pieces of colorful British pressed glass are on display through Oct. 30 at the Campus Martius Museum in a new exhibit called Glass in Art & History: Commemorative & Novelty Items from the United Kingdom.
Many of the objects commemorate events in the life of Queen Victoria, such as her marriage to Prince Albert, her Golden Jubilee (1887) and her Diamond Jubilee (1897). Items from the times of Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI are also featured.
Other glass articles honor important political figures, such as John Bright and Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone, or depict important art works, such as the lions in Londons Trafalgar Square. Many interesting glass novelty items, ranging from posy holders to presents for children, are also displayed.
James Measell, associate historian at Fenton Art Glass Co. in Williamstown, arranged the exhibit.
The colors and variety of shapes are spectacular, Measell said. This is probably the largest display of British pressed glass ever seen in America.
Campus Martius site manager, Andy Verhoff, said the museum looks forward to welcoming glass enthusiasts and collectors to this one-of-a-kind exhibit.
The Campus Martius Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday and Columbus Day from noon to 5 p.m.
Admission to the exhibit is included with regular admission to the Campus Martius Museum: $7 for adults, $3 for students and children 6 and over and $6 for senior citizens. Admission is free for Ohio Historical Society members, Friends of the Museum members and those age 5 and under.
