County recycling center no longer accepting glass

The Iroquois County Recycling Center will no longer be taking glass.

That was the message Iroquois County Board Health Committee chair John Dowling gave board members Tuesday.
Dowling said Brian Martell, solid waste coordinator, can no longer find a market for crushed glass, as many companies have found it more economical to manufacture new glass or to use plastic packaging instead.

"He offered to give them the glass," Dowling said of the county's recent glass buyer in Streator. "They wouldn't take it."

Dowling said signs have been placed at collection sites throughout the county, reminding recyclers they can no longer bring glass items.

He said Martell will continue to look for a place to take glass. "He's always searching for markets," Dowling said.

He said that while the glass market is down, both plastic and metals are still doing well. In the report, Dowling said Martell told committee members the recycling center should reach its goals this year and will probably surpass them.

Dowling also told the board about an upcoming household hazardous waste pickup from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at Kankakee Community College.
