Owens-Corning develops glass mat composite for auto interiors

Owens-Corning Automotive has developed a new glass mat composite with improved structural and acoustic properties for automotive interiors.

At the US automotive industry Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan, the company claimed that its new polypropylene based AcoustiMax substrate is 45% stronger in all directions and 20% quieter than competing composite systems, due to better absorptive sound ability.

Its good lofting characteristic up to 100% enables GMT processors to make large thickness variations within moulded parts.

Applications for AcoustiMax are expected to include headliners, boot liners, door modules, seat backs and package trays.

The new substrate is available in thicknesses of 8-16mm and can make parts with density of 800-1,600g per sq metre.

AcoustiMax will be launched in the European market during the AVK-TV reinforced plastics conference in Baden-Baden at the end of September.
