The American Ceramic Society's (ACerS) 6th Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology (PAC RIM 6) will feature many of the world's preeminent experts on some of the world's most advanced technologies. PAC RIM 6, which will be held September 11-16, 2005 at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Hotel in Maui, Hawaii, is the preeminent international meeting for ceramic and materials scientists, engineers, researchers, and manufacturers to share knowledge on state-of-the-art advancements in materials technology.
Endorsed by The Australasian Ceramic Society, The Ceramic Society of Japan, The Chinese Ceramic Society, and The Korean Ceramic Society, the PAC RIM 6 schedule of events includes 20 symposia and over 700 presentations. Over 200 presentations will focus on emerging ceramic technologies. Attendees will exchange knowledge with 800 fellow scientists from more than 20 countries. Conference participants will gain international perspective from PAC RIM country experts' discussion on the future of materials science and engineering, benefit from shared knowledge and networking, and learn where the field is heading within an international framework.
The plenary session focuses on the Future of Materials Science and Engineering. Renowned speakers include: Rustum Roy, Evan Pugh Professor of the Solid State, Professor of Geochemistry, Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, The Pennsylvania State University; Julia Phillips, Director of the Physical & Chemical Sciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories; Teruo Kishi, President, National Institute of Materials Science, Japan; and Toni Grobstein Marechaux, Director, Board on Manufacturing and Engineering Design, The National Academies. Topics will include globalization trends, education and workforce issues, and future directions for research and development. A panel discussion will follow the plenary session.
Specific topics to be discussed include Advanced Ceramics for Clean Energy Applications, Advances in Composites, Computational Approaches in Materials Research, Processing and Characterization of Nanopowders, Processing of High Temperature Superconductors, Novel Processing of Ceramics and Composites, and many others. The American Ceramic Society's Basic Science, Electronics, Engineering Ceramics, and Glass and Optical Materials Divisions are fully participating in this content-rich conference.
The First Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology was organized by The American Ceramic Society in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1993. Since that initial conference, The American Ceramic Society and other Pacific Rim ceramic societies have organized four PAC RIM meetings. Those meetings were organized by the Australasian Ceramic Society in 1996 in Cairns, Australia; the Korean Ceramic Society in 1998 in Kyongju, Korea; The American Ceramic Society in 2001 in Maui, Hawaii; and the Ceramic Society of Japan in 2003 in Nagoya, Japan.
