Demolition of former glass plant could start next month

The site of a former glass plant in Moundsville could be the future home of a grocery store, a drive-through bank and a sports bar, a developer has said.

Developer Harold Games spoke Friday about ideas for the Fostoria Glass Co. plant site and prospective new tenants.

"I'm still in the discussion phase with all of these people," Games said.

Games, Moundsville Mayor Ralph DiRemigio and an abatement contractor signed an agreement Friday, and demolition of most of the structures comprising the former plant site could start in about three weeks.

Demolition work was expected to take between eight and 10 months, said Jack Sobeck of NJC Corp., the Pittsburgh abatement contractor. The company plans to salvage most of the structures' steel, brick, stone and wood, Sobeck said.

Some permit and notification issues need to be resolved with the state and federal government, Sobeck said.

Asbestos abatement was expected to cost about $100,000, Games said.

The Fostoria project is "another building block to the future of the city," DiRemigio said.

The site's shipping building was to be divided into five units for reuse, and another structure on the property could become a cultural center.

"We are just excited with the prospect of the old site becoming a productive part of the community," said City Manager Allen Hendershot.
