Unveiled: 180ft glass tower plan for city centre

A stunning 17-storey glass tower block which will soar more than 180ft into the sky is planned for a derelict site in Glasgow city centre.

If it gets the go-ahead, the £9million office complex opposite the Mitchell Library on the other side of the M8 is likely to become one of the best-known buildings in the city.

Property developers Credential Charing Cross are behind the plan, which goes before the city council's planning committee tomorrow.

The scheme, on the corner of Bath Street and Newton Street, will provide 7800sq m of office space in the tower with a further2300sq m of offices in roof-top extensions to existing buildings at the west and north of the site.

Space for a restaurant and shop will be created at the base of the new tower.

If councillors approve the application it is expected work will begin before the end of the year and take about 18 months.

Marilyn MacMillan, marketing director of Credential Charing Cross, said: "The building will transform what is at present a fairly bleak brownfield corner site. The top of the tower will be lit up and could look quite sexy."
