DuPont Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Gary Pfeiffer discussed the company's financial strength and its commitment to achieving sustainable growth in an address to financial analysts and investors Tuesday at Salomon Smith Barney's 12th Annual Chemical Conference in New York City.

Gary said DuPont is focusing on business fundamentals, careful cash management and seizing emerging opportunities as its deals with the current downturn in the economy and prepares for the upturn when it occurs. He noted that DuPont is utilizing three strategies - integrated science, knowledge intensity and Six Sigma productivity gains - to achieve sustainable growth.

He said the company's balance sheet - the strongest in roughly 20 years -- gives DuPont an edge in the marketplace. "That strongest balance sheet in two decades in the worst economy in two decades gives us a competitive advantage as we come through 2002," Gary said.

He added: "DuPont is a company that has strong businesses. We have a newly invigorated and disciplined use of cash that gives us broad access to capital. We believe that puts us in a position to be a company that will deliver results in uncertain times."
