Glistening glass monument unveiled
|
When the city unveiled its 9-11 memorial Saturday, the third anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the sun kicked up prism-like reflections in the 12-foot glass tower within a tower.
About 1,300 people were on hand along with family members of more than 120 victims for the somber tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks. The center of the glass sculpture designed and built by Henry Richardson lists the names of all of Connecticut's victims.
"It's all done with broken glass," said Judi Higley, mother of Robert Higley II, who died in the second tower to be hit after telling his trainees to flee the building. "I'm so proud of this town for taking the initiative to remember these people."
Robert Higley II worked for Aon Risk Management Services in the south tower, and his mother learned after the attack he was training five new employees that day. After the first jet hit the north tower, he sent the trainees out of the building. Two who survived sought out his mother and told her Robert saved their lives. "I consider myself lucky. He was training new employees, and he sent them out and went back in to check the conference rooms. It answered some questions for me," his mother said.
