SCHOTT to Showcase Success of Glass Tubing in Photobioreactors at Algae Biomass Summit

Testing shows that CONTURAX® tubing improves algae growth yields over 25 percent    Algae producers and researchers are always looking to increase algae growth rate in photobioreactors (PBRs), and they’re achieving it with glass tubing.

SCHOTT, the international technology group, will demonstrate how glass tubing can improve the productivity and yield of algae in PBRs at the Algae Biomass Summit in Washington, D.C. The PBR product portfolio and CONTURAX® tubing will be displayed at SCHOTT’s booth, #313, at the summit from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.



SCHOTT partners with commercial algae producers and research institutions to test how different geometries of glass tubing affect algae growth and biomass yields. In initial experiments, CONTURAX® oval tubing has shown to improve yields by over 25 percent and increase light penetration in closed PBR systems, and dry biomass output per day increased by more than 25 percent in a PBR.



“Over the past few years, we’ve been rethinking glass tubing, developing oval and thin-walled tubes to measure their impact on algae growth, and we’re continuing experiments with both algae companies and universities throughout the world,” said Nikolaus Schultz, PBR Designer at SCHOTT Research and Development. “Working with these partners and refining glass tubing, we aim to uncover new efficiencies and tap algae’s full potential.”
