Libbey Glass plans temporary layoffs in Shreveport

Libbey Glass Inc.'s plant in Shreveport will temporarily lay off part of its 1,100-member work force later this year while a furnace is repaired, the company says.
The layoffs from late October through December are unlikely to total more than 100, but could be higher, said plant manager Bob Dunton. An exact number will be determined later, he said.
Dunton said the laid-off workers will return once the furnace work is finished. During the layoff, they will be eligible for unemployment benefits and health benefits, he said.
Libbey Glass is currently lobbying Louisiana officials for 10 years of property tax breaks related to a potential $35 million expansion. Company officials have said the expansion will create no new permanent jobs as the project now stands.
