Delta: 20-foot-high glass tower to mark library
|
A glass tower stretching 20 feet skyward will serve as a beacon to the community when it is erected as part of Delta Public Library's expansion project.
"It will also give the library architectural significance," said Patricia Grover, library director.
The tower, part of the new entryway, is included in the blueprints approved by the library's board of trustees. Bids for the $125,000 project are to be opened July 15 with construction expected to get under way by the end of July. "We hope this will be a 90-day project," she said.
Plans for the tower were drawn up after library officials learned a peaked roof couldn't go on the addition because snow would drop onto the library's flat roof, causing problems, she said.
The officials are interested in giving the one-story building height because it is sandwiched between taller buildings, including a neighboring three-story structure. The front of the addition will feature brick with reds and browns to blend with the library's tan-colored bricks and those of surrounding buildings, Mrs. Grover said.
The project will expand the library at 402 Main St. by 1,070 square feet. It will double the size of the front entry foyer, providing more room for strollers and people with handicaps. About 600 square feet of the total 1,070 will be public service areas. Audio-visual and books-on-tape collections will be expanded. A quiet corner will be available for genealogy research.
Vertical windows will be put in the front of the addition, and the patio will be part of a covered walkway area. A stone-and-brick bench with a delta (triangle) on it will be put on the patio, she said. Memorial bricks from the sidewalk will be used for a memorial wall in the patio area.
