Bendel Glass is dead

The hope of revitalising the Bendel Glass Industry, which was abandoned for over 22 years, appeared lost as Governor James Ibori of Delta State has declared that there was really nothing to sell in the industry and therefore nothing to revitalise.

Making this declaration in Asaba during the monthly media chat, Ibori said "the Committee on Privatisation has looked at this factory, that factory had been abandoned for over 22 years. And even if you have any technology there, the technology will be obsolete. There is really nothing to sell in that factory and therefore nothing to revitalise."

Besides saying there was no way the factory could be brought to life, the governor noted that the only way the premises could be used again was to bring in new machineries, adding that what was left in the place was the structures and the land.

On the absence of a viable industry in the state, the governor explained that the state government does not build industries, adding that government was moving away from getting involved in businesses better left to the private sector.

He said that if the Bendel Glass Industry was viable, the government would have tried to revitalise and sell it off, adding that this process was the reasonable choice open the state government in any industry it gets involved in.

"Delta State government, as a government, will not go and get pieces of land, determine that they can mine petroleum products or whatever or they can start making roofing sheets and then build a factory to make roofing sheets. No, we will not do that," Ibori declared.
