CPT: Glass substrate supply at Asahi's furnaces will be critically impacted by low utilization rate

Low utilization rates at Asahi Glass’ two glass furnaces has contributed to a tight supply of its TFT LCD glass substrates, said Lin Cheng-hung, chairman and president of Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT), at yesterday’s investors conference.

With Asahi’s glass furnaces operating at a utilization rate of only 30-35%, CPT has decided to reduce its amount of glass substrate orders to Asahi, Lin explained. However, he asserts that CPT will increase the amount ordered after June and he expects Asahi to expand capacity by August. CPT did not mention whether it would increase glass substrate orders from other companies.

Asahi supports 70% of CPT’s glass substrate need, the rest comes from Nippon Electric Glass (NEG).

Asahi Glass Fine Techno Taiwan, Asahi’s Taiwanese subsidiary, declined to comment on the news.

As for color filters (CFs), CPT is in talks with Japan-based Toppan and Dai Nippon Printing (DNP) about sixth-generation (6G) CF technology, Lin said. CPT plans to break ground at its in-house 6G CF plant this July. The company self-developed CF technology for its 4.5G plant, Lin added.
