The breaking strength of container glass is determined considerably by internal mechanical stresses. Ongoing testing of residual stress is thus a key task of quality assurance.  Visual assessment using conventional polariscopes and polarimeters is highly subjective and subject to error.

Yet reliable measurements are a core prerequisite for optimization processes, such as cutting energy consumption of annealing lehrs.

At glasstec we present the latest versions of our realtime polarimeters StrainScope™ S3 and StrainScope™ S4. These instruments automate the measurement and evaluation of residual stress in glass, enabling rapid and objective quality assessment in just seconds.

The new version of the StrainScope™ software offers not only numerous detail optimizations but also a wide range of additional functions, such as:

  • Compilation of parameters to define methods, with the option of locking any or all parameters against unauthorized changes

  • Line scan function for graphic display of measured values along freely positioned lines in the measurement image

  • The evaluation range can be adjusted directly in themain windows either via the correspondingparameters or interactively using the mouse

  • The region of interest can now also be defined as circular or elliptical shape

Measuring Cord Stress with StrainMatic™ Cord Tester

The breaking strength of container glass is determined considerably by internal mechanical stresses, such as can be caused by inhomogeneous glass compositions. Ongoing testing of cord stress is thus a key quality assurance process. Yet manual measurement using a polarization microscope and Berek compensator is extremely time-consuming and requires experienced personnel.

At glasstec we present the new StrainMatic™ M4 cord tester. This high-precision measuring device automates measurement and evaluation of stress birefringence in ring sections and enables a rapid and objective assessment of quality in less than 30 seconds.

Measuring Glass Color with Chroma™

Color can make the difference between market success and failure for a product. Particularly when using natural or recycled raw materials with varying chemical composition, continuous, objective monitoring of the effect of color is a key prerequisite for uniform quality.

With the Chroma™ software package and a PC-controlled spectrophotometer, you can now precisely measure the spectral properties of glass types, and on the basis of these calculate and graphically display color values. Direct control of a wide range of spectrometer models, a modern, intuitive user interface and an integrated database with a broad array of evaluation functions offer numerous advantages, and above all major time savings compared to other solutions.

The new version of Chroma™ boasts a broad range of new features, such as:

  • Calculation of color values relative to predefined targets or reference standards with graphical display of differences

  • Consideration of the wavelength-dependent refractive index (dispersion) according to the Sellmeier, Schott or Cauchy equation, or interpolated user input

  • User-defined immersion solutions and reflection standards

  • Ability to compile spectrometer parameters in configuration profiles to enable rapid, convenient changeover between various measurement tasks

Additionally, we have listened to our users and optimized numerous functional details throughout, in order to enhance user-friendliness and streamline work processes.

Batch Calculation and Glass Development with BatchMaker™

Rising costs for raw materials and energy are making batch calculation an ever more important business factor in glass manufacturing. This is particularly true for mass production of products such as bottles or float glass. BatchMaker™ offers you a standard solution for simple, reliable calculation of batch recipes and glass properties.

We present the new version of BatchMaker™ at glasstec. The most important new feature is the central storage of all master data, analyses, glass recipes and batches in an integrated database and the clear sorting of all recipes by plant, furnace and glass color. This makes the software significantly easier to use, particularly when multiple users are working with it.
