GGR’s UNIC crane adds a touch of glass to Haymarket station

Date: 5 September 2014

One of GGR’s UNIC mini spider cranes made its way to Haymarket railway station in Edinburgh recently to help with its dramatic transformation as part of a £24 million upgrade project.

Opened in 1842, Haymarket is Edinburgh’s second busiest railway station after Waverley and has been modernized with a new glazed concourse.GGR provided a UNIC URW-376 mini crane with a GL-UMC600 glass manipulator fixed onto its six section hydraulic boom to help with glazing the new roof.

At just 1.3 metres wide, the 2.9 tonne capacity UNIC crane could easily gain access to the station and work in the limited space available on this busy site.

Using the 600kg capacity glazing head, the crane was able to work underneath the 9 metre high roof, lifting the panels into an overhead position and moving them into position for installation. The crane’s precision controls came in particularly useful when fitting 200kg glass units to the tricky area that linked the new glazed concourse to the old station building.

A proven performer on station refurbishment projects, this Network Rail approved UNIC compact crane successfully provided a safe and simple solution for working in this restricted access location. GGR offers a range of lifting equipment for carrying out overhead and canopy glazing work, read more here.
