glasstec 2014: The entire world of glass - Most comprehensive supporting programme ever

Date: 27 August 2014

After two years, the international glass industry will once again descend on Düsseldorf for glasstec 2014 from 21 to 24 October to experience the industry’s pre-eminent event.

The leading international trade fair with some 1,150 expected exhibitors, glasstec comprehensively covers the uniquely diverse glass supply chain. The offerings of the previous event in 2012 attracted more than 42,000 visitors representing the sectors mechanical engineering; glass manufacturing, processing and finishing; crafts; architecture and construction; windows and façades; and solar. No other glass-sector trade fair in the world can match the international share of trade visitors, 59% of whom travelled to Germany from abroad to attend glasstec’s previous edition. What’s more, 83% of visitors said they were directly involved in decision-making processes at their companies.

For 2014, glasstec’s extensive supporting programme in the crafts segment has been further enhanced. From now on, it will consist of the special show “glass technology live,” the “Crafts Center” with the new “Glass Crafts LIVE” theme, the “Autoglass Arena” and the “glass art” exhibition. Located in the vicinity of glass technology live, visitors will also find the Façade Center featuring the “Professional Center Glass + Façade.” The congress programme of glasstec consists of the scientific conference “engineered transparency” focussed on structural uses of glass, the “Architectural Congress” and the “solar meets glass” conference on topics at the intersection of glass and solar.

The bottom line: Visitors from the mechanical engineering, manufacturing, crafts, architecture/construction, window/façade and solar sectors can once again look forward to a programme packed with trade know-how specifically geared toward each target audience.

The future of glass in coming years: glass technology live

The special show “glass technology live” (gtl) in Hall 11, organised by Prof. Stefan Behling and his team at the Institute for Building Construction at the University of Stuttgart, is one of glasstec’s marquee events and always draws huge crowds. Products about to emerge in coming years are on display here – usually including the highlights from the various fields of application, and always with a focus on architecture. For example, one of the eye-catchers from the 2012 “Façade and Construction” theme was a window integrated into glazing without any visible framing. In 2014, the highlighted themes at this special show, which covers about 2,500 square metres, will fall under the rubric “Intelligent Glass” and include the areas Intelligent Building Envelopes, Façade + Energy (Solar), Innovations in Glass, and Glass Design. Consequently, some of the innovative exhibits awaiting visitors will represent segments such as light directing, translucent glazing, composite elements in façades, glass and OLEDs as well as light and thin glass for architecture and displays.

A high-calibre trade symposium will accompany “glass technology live.” Embedded right in gtl’s exhibition space, a series of lectures on cutting-edge topics will be presented there. All trade fair visitors may attend this event free of charge. Recognised presenters from leading research institutes, associations, companies and architecture firms will discuss in-depth a range of topics. Just like the special show, the symposium will hone in on the future of the glass industry. The gtl Symposium programme will be dedicated to a different theme on each day of the trade fair, with the content designed by these partner organisations: the colloquium of the Hüttentechnische Vereinigung der deutschen Glasindustrie e.V. (the research association of the German glass industry – HVG) and the Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft e.V. (German Society of Glass Technology – DGG) (topic: Glass Melting and Forming, Tue); the Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e.V. (German Engineering Federation – VDMA) (Processing and Finishing Technology, Wed); the University of Stuttgart (Architecture and Technology, Thu); the Bundesinnungsverband des Glaserhandwerks (German Federal Association of Glaziers Trades – BIV) (focal theme: Crafts, Fri) and the Bundesverband Flachglas (German Flat Glass Association – BF) (Glass in Windows and Façades).

Concentrated information revolving around the building envelope

Directly adjacent to “glass technology live,” glasstec visitors will find the Façade Center, featuring glass-focussed content geared toward façade designers, construction engineers, architects and the glass-processing trades. It consists of exhibitor presentations in Hall 11, innovative façade mock-ups at the nearby gtl special show and the “Professional Center Glass + Façade,” which offers information presented by institutes and associations including the Bundesverband Flachglas e.V. (German Flat Glass Association – BV); the Verband Fenster und Fassade (German Window and Façade Association – VFF); the ift Rosenheim – Institut für Fenstertechnik e.V. (Institute for Window Technology); the UBF ¬– Unabhängige Berater für Fassadentechnik e.V. (an association for façade technology consultants); and the Bayrisches Zentrum für Angewandte Energieforschung e.V. (Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research – ZAE Bayern). A new component of the Façade Center will be European Façade Network’s efnMobile where students – along with the University of Applied Sciences in East Westphalia-Lippe – will create façade models live and offer façade consulting.

Architecture Congress: Glass 5.0 – Design, Function, Emotion

Thanks to its broad range of glass products for use in architecture, glasstec attracts a large number of architects and building designers. In addition, the supporting programme caters to this target audience by offering the Architecture Congress sponsored by the partners Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen (Chamber of Architecture of North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Technical University Delft, as well as by Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences. Architects, structural engineers, climate engineers and façade designers will meet at the Congress Center East (CCD Ost) of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre on 22 October, the second day of the trade fair. The title of this year’s Congress is “Glass 5.0 – Design, Function, and Emotion.” Presenters will include renowned architects such as Graham Dodd/Arup Fellow, Winy Maas/MVRDV and Paolo Cruz/University of Minho. The event is certified as professional ongoing education (AKNW – 4 lessons for architects and interior designers, IK-Bau NRW – 4 time units). The admission fee is € 49 and includes a glasstec ticket for two days.

Scientific conference: “engineered transparency”

The science- and technology-oriented “engineered transparency” conference specifically addresses target audiences from the research and development as well as the construction and implementation communities. The latest trends and developments in the structural use of glass will be discussed, which means the event will be geared toward scientists, civil engineers, planners/architects/designers, construction experts, employees of construction authorities and interested builder-owners. Organised jointly by the technical universities Dresden and Darmstadt, the conference is entitled “Glass, Façade, Energy” and will take place at the beginning of glasstec on 21 and 22 October. The keynote speakers will be Dr.-Ing. Winfried Heusler/SCHÜCO (Bielefeld, Germany), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan Knippers/Knippers Helbig (Stuttgart, Germany), John Kooymans/RJC (Toronto, Canada) and Christoph Timm/SOM (New York, USA). The conference is structured into the three main sections Structural Glass, Façades and Solar Technology, with individual focal topics to include (Timber-Glass)-Laminates and Hybrid Structures, Adhesive Bonding Technologies, Energy and Sustainability, and Building-integrated Solar Technology and -Design. Visitors of glasstec can have a close look at some of the presented technologies at glass technology live.

Multifaceted range of offerings for craftsmen

The “Crafts Center” is glasstec’s umbrella category summarizing the plethora of offerings for the glass-processing trades and crafts. Besides the stand of the Bundesinnungsverband des Glaserhandwerks (German Federal Association of Glazier Trades – BIV) and the exhibitors in Hall 9, these include an extensive supporting programme dedicated to this target group. A brand-new item on the agenda is “Crafts LIVE,” an area where glass-processing craftsmen are encouraged to experience tools and materials in a hands-on environment. To that end, eight interactive stations modelled on real life will be set up, each assigned to one of these themes: Cutting (cutting and storing), Processing (drilling and grinding), Finishing (varnishing and gluing) and Installation (of fittings, for example). Major themes are Handling, Transport and Workplace Safety. In addition to the interactive stations, a demonstration area will be set up where the erection of a glass façade, the construction of a shower stall and the installation of a sliding glass door will be shown, for example.

Craftsman’s ambition is what is required for two installation and assembly competitions. On each day of the trade fair at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, teams in the activity area of “Crafts LIVE” can compete with each other to see who is quickest to assemble and disassemble a glass cage on a transporter and completely install a sliding door. The companies Bohle and Hegla support BIV as concept partners for Crafts LIVE.

Diverse know-how will be conveyed in the integrated glass finishers’ area. Under the motto “Glass meets design” specialist speakers from the sector will be presenting new products and finishing technologies on all four days of the fair. Among other themes on the agenda are the laser processing of glass, new coating and layering systems, bent glass and innovative adhesive technology. In addition, such important themes as the correct glass dimensioning, assessment of glass damage and restructuring of the master craftsman examination ordinance will be covered and tips given for new areas of activity. The comprehensive information package makes the visit to the “Crafts Centre” not only interesting for glaziers, the associated sectors and trades will also find plenty of inspiration and specialist input.

Autoglass Arena

The “Autoglass Arena” supplements the supporting programme for tradesmen and craftsmen by adding an automotive glass area. BIV is the leading organiser of the Autoglass Arena, as well. Besides a range of relevant offerings by more than 50 exhibitors, the area will feature the National Auto Glaziers’ competition pitting the best German auto glaziers against each other in removing and installing windshields, side and rear windows quickly and technically perfect as well as repairing stone chips at car windows. Attractive prizes await the top performers.

After the success at the last glasstec, the Auto Glaziers’ Plenary will once again take place as part of the Autoglass Arena and feature a comprehensive range of free lectures and workshops. While the event will be dedicated to technical topics on the first day of glasstec, the second trade fair day will turn to business issues such as leasing concepts and insurance issues. The National Auto Glaziers' competition will be staged on the trade fair Thursday and Friday.

The “glass art” special exhibition displaying art objects made from glass completes the Crafts Center. Exhibiting artists hailing from internationally renowned galleries, the Hentrich Glass Museum and the Glaskünstlervereinigung Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia Association of Glass Artists) will cover a broad spectrum of art from glass vessels to sculptural objects to glass painting.

Furthermore, on the trade fair Thursday, the BIV will once again present the “Glass Finishers’ Award” and the “Glaziers’ Award” for the most successful German companies in those areas.

Solar meets Glass – the intersection of two sectors

The fourth “Solar meets Glass – Industry Summit for Markets, Costs and Technology” conference at the Congress Center East will be on the glasstec agenda for 20 and 21 October. Experts from the glass and solar industry will use the unique setting provided by glasstec, the leading international trade fair, to discuss the topics that touch both sectors. Both sides benefit: For the glass industry, it’s a chance to explore and assess new sales opportunities, while the solar industry can use the glass sector’s expertise in tough cost-based competition. In addition to providing a market and technology overview, the conference programme – developed by Messe Düsseldorf in conjunction with the Ostbayerisches Technologie-Transfer-Institut e.V. (the Technology Transfer Institute of Eastern Bavaria – OTTI) – will emphasise new business models for success in the glass and solar industry as well as solar applications in the building shell. The Conference Committee is made up of members of the business and research communities as well as the Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau (German Engineering Association – VDMA), specifically its Forum Glass Technology and its Working Group Photovoltaic Equipment.
