Intertek Expands Fire, Structural, and Code Evaluation Expertise

Date: 28 July 2014

Addition of key personnel adds expertise to Intertek’s portfolio of building products industry experts   As part of the initiative to grow its certification services offerings and broaden its technical expertise in the building products industry, Intertek has engaged three leading engineering veterans who bring a combined 70-plus years of experience to the building products division.

This news follows the December 2013 announcement of Intertek’s acquisition of Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI) and the recent introduction of the Code Compliance Research Report by Intertek (CCRR) which offers a more timely and cost-effective option for code compliance and product acceptance than competing organizations.

“These three individuals are well-respected professionals who sit on the pivotal codes and standards committees that are key to the industries we serve,” noted Gavin Campbell, Intertek’s Global Senior Vice President, Building Products. “Their high-caliber expertise aligns perfectly with our goal of providing a total solution of testing, certification and engineering support that our customers and industry partners can have confidence in.”

The three who have joined Intertek  in recent months are:

  • Daniel Cheney, P.E., Program Manager– Code Evaluations, brings 25 years of experience in testing,  product acceptance, codes and standards to the Certification Services group. He  is a member of ASTM Committees D05, D14 and D07, and has served as Chairman of  the AWC Subcommittee on the Fire Performance of Wood, the AWC Wood Design  Standards Committee and the Wood I-Joist Manufacturers Association. He is also  a member of the NAHB Construction, Codes and Standards Committee. Cheney uses  his extensive experience to develop programs that will help clients gain product  acceptance in their respective markets.

  • Barry Badders, P.E. joined Intertek as Program Manager– Fire Testing and Certification and is based in the San Antonio laboratory. Badders has a Master of Science in fire protection engineering and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and fire engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Texas and  Florida, and has 15 years of experience in mechanical and fire engineering. He is a member of ASTM Committee E05, chair  of the NFPA Fire Test Committee and a convener of the ISO Working Group 1 under TC92/SC2. In addition to filling the senior technical position in San Antonio, Badders will be working with Intertek’s other fire labs to strengthen and expand their fire testing capabilities.

  • Steven Marquiss, P.E., a Senior Project Engineer with Certification Service brings with him a wealth of knowledge that comes from more than 30 years of experience in civil and structural engineering. Marquiss has worked on a variety of projects involving all aspects  of building construction. He earned both a Master of Science and Bachelor of  Science in civil engineering from Penn State, and is a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and Texas. In his new role, Marquiss will be responsible for product evaluation and certification, with an  emphasis on Code Compliance Research Report projects.

“Whether the goal is a listing or a code compliance research  report,” said Campbell, “we will guide the project through the test plan, testing, plant inspection, evaluation and follow-up inspection phases so as to  provide an efficient and cost-effective experience. When  our clients succeed, we succeed.”
