Ford's Mercury division revived its XR heritage earlier this month at the annual SEMA show with the introduction of the Mercury XR Mountaineer.

The SEMA show vehicle, which exhibits bold European styling cues that highlight classic elegance, includes automotive glass interlayers by Solutia Automotive that add to its elegance.

Sandwiched between the XR Mountaineer's glass are several of Solutia's advanced interlayers: Vanceva Quiet and Color in the windshield and Vanceva Color and metallic in the front, second row, and rear-quarter windows.

The interlayers were selected specifically to enhance certain aspects of the vehicle. The acoustic windshield provides exceptional protection from wind noise, enhancing the performance of the vehicle's Infinity Sound System, and the metallic interlayer provides a visual link to the brushed steel trim of the tailgate and grill. Finally, the gray Vanceva Color interlayer contributes an understated elegance to the vehicle. A variety of laminators provided services to supply the window system to L.A. West, the vehicle's integrator. Visteon provided Glass and laminating services for the acoustic windshield. For the laminated side glass, FoxFire Inc., PPG Industries, and Standard Bent Glass and Metal provided services.

"We have worked hard to offer a value-based automotive glazing systems to our customers," said Jay Pyper, Solutia's North American market development director, "it is gratifying to see these advanced interlayers to used to enhance the value of products."

In addition to its contribution to the styling of the XR Mountaineer, laminated glass significantly reduces wind noise and improves intrusion resistance and UV protection, compared to conventional tempered glass. The addition of the metallic interlayer also provides a solar benefit because it reflects the sun away from the vehicle.
