Licensees support glass recycling project
|
The Glass Goes Green trial is providing recycling bins to collect glass bottles from 25 pubs, hotels and clubs in Carterton, Eynsham, Witney, Long Hanborough and Church Hanborough.
The trial was launched following an audit, which found that glass accounted for nearly a third of the 2,350 tonnes of rubbish produced by licensed premises in West Oxfordshire every year.
The trial aims to assess the feasibility of recycling glass from licensed premises in rural areas and we have been encouraged by the response in West Oxfordshire, said Matt Todd, project researcher at Oxford Brookes University.
A survey we conducted recently has shown that managers of most licensed retail premises are willing to recycle glass bottles but logistical problems and cost are the biggest barrier. We hope that this project will shed some light on how these problems can be addressed to increase recycling levels.
The project is a collaboration between the Centre for Environmental Studies in the Hospitality Industry at Oxford Brookes University and West Oxfordshire District Council (WODC).
