Corning may build second TFT LCD glass furnace in Luchu Science Park
|
Corning plans to lease 25 hectares of land in Taiwans Luchu Science Park, revealed Chien Dai, director of development organization for the Southern Taiwan Science-Based Industrial Park (STSIP) administration, indicating that the US-based company may choose the park as the location of its second TFT LCD glass-smelting furnace on the island.
Dai revealed the information in a summary report to Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian while speaking on November 16 at a ceremony to mark the opening of a new Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park (TSIP) expressway. The STSIP administers the Luchu and Tainan science parks.
Earlier this year, Corning had been rumored to be considering building a new glass-smelting furnace in the Central Taiwan Science-Based Industrial Park (CTSIP).
Corning officials in Taiwan would only say that the companys expansion plans were still focused on the Tainan Science-Based Industrial Park (TSIP), where it began building a glass-smelting furnace on eight hectares of land last March, but that it would not rule out building more furnaces.
Corning on October 22 announced that its board of directors had approved the remaining portion of a three-stage US$180 million plan to expand and enhance its TSIP facility. The first phase was approved in July. The company expects production at the site to begin by the second quarter of 2004 and the entire expansion to be completed late next year.
